Drunkenness.- J °hn William Webb was lined 10s, m default forty-eight hours’ imprisonment; Thomas Mayne not appearing had liis bail forfeited \ William Lloyd. 20s, or fortyeight hours’. J .A Bad Character. —George Buchanan, alvas Stuart, alias Beaumont, an old offender was sentenced to fourteen days’imprisonment with hard labor for vagrancy, and cautioned that it round in Dunedin afterwards he would get a more severe sentence. Undesirable Immigrants, Catherine Honey, Jane Curtin, alias Paul, Elizabeth Anderson, and Mary Anne Heffernan were jointly charged with having no lawful means of support at Dunedin, on March 27.—Sergeant Anderson deposed that prisoner Loney, an immigrant by tl e Caroline, was a prostitute aud had served three months in gaol for larceny. She had also been convicted for drunkenness. He had seen her knocking about the streets and hanging about the barracks. Heffernan came out m the Dunfillan fifteen months ago and, from the day of her arrival her conduct had been very bad. She was a prostitute.—Prisoner Heffernan (to witness) : I am sorry to say you tell a lie.- Mr Pyke : You wont improve your case by that conduct.— Witness added that he had known Paul since her arrival by the Asia. She was a prostitute. Andersen was also a prostitute. The prisoners had been turned out of the barracks on Thursday evening, and had slept in the open air evei since Their conduct was most disgraceful—•Jacob Lckhoff, master of the Sailers’ Home had known the prisoners for seven weeks! they were a continual nuisance, and were always hanging abcat and solic ting men. Looney : It’s a lie. Heffernan : Be quiet now. It s a filthy statement. (Laughter). The Bench discharged Paul and Anderson on their promise to quit their present quarters. Heffernan was discharged with a strong caution in consequence of her impertinent remarks to t.ic witnesses. L'.noy, being an old offender, was sent to gaol for a month. ■Neglected Child. -Elizabeth Clarke, two years of age, was charged with being a neglected child, having been found wandering at large. The child was illegitimate, and Inspector Mallard, in answer to the Bench, said that the mother was now a respectable girl and desirous of leading an honest life.—The child was sent to the Industrial School for twelve mouths, and ordered to he brought up in the Congregational form, of persuasion. Charge op Stealing Spirits. -John Grant a dish ler in the employ of the New Zealand Distillery Company, was charged by his !ate employer, Charles Ritchie Howden with stealing from the distillery, Cumberland street, on or about March 25, a quantity of distiUed whiskey and gin.—Mr Stout defended.ili Pyke remarked that the only information betore mm was an application for a search warrant.—lnspector Mallard explained that prosecutor was not present, and as accused was not arrested till Saturday evening, an application by the police tor a remand till Thursday was gianted; accused being._admitted to bail in his own recognisance of LSO and two sureties of L 25 each.
