ACCIDENTS AND OFFENCES.
At the inquest held on the body of the lad who was killed on the Glutha railway on Tuesday, the jury added to the verdict of accidentally killed, a rider, that they desired to condemn the practice of allowing Workmen to be carried in ballast trucks in front of the engine, k it being exceedingly dangerous, as from the lightness of the trucks they are more liable to be thrown off the line. In Princes street, on Thursday afternoon an elderly lady named Abbie was knocked down by a horse ridden by a boy, and besides having one of her shoulder blades broken received a nasty punctured wound on the left side of the scalp. On inquiry to-dav we learned that the patient is progressing favorably under Dr Cole’s treatment, and may now be considered out of danger* A man named James M'Kinlay was found dead yesterday morning near the Forbury i * *l ac ® course - He was last seen alive at about 9.30 a.m., when he was leaving Dunone time he was in the. employ of the Darbor Steam Company. . The undermentioned prispneis were received into the gaol yesterday John Mandewon, John Forter, Adath Kerse, and Patrick M'Quaid, who were each sentenced on the 23rd inst., at Palmerston, by Mr Murdoch, R.M., to one calendar month’s imprisonment, with hard labor, for stealing

Seven stacks of wheat, the property of Mr Alex. A nans, of Flag Swamp, Waikouaiti, were destroyed by fire on Wednesday last. They were worth about L6O. and were insured for L/ 0 in the National Insuranoe Company a office. The tire is supposed to nave been the aot of an incendiary. A miraculous escape from seriona injury happened to two ladies yesterday. The horse drawing the buggy in which they were seated bolted from the Hillside toll-bar, where the driver was thrown out, and pursued its career as far as Robinson and Oa’s, Princes street, without meeting any obstruction, Turning sharply round Manor place the buggy oune into contact with a dray, and with each force aa to completely carry away the fore-oartiago, leaving the body of the buggy stationary and its occupants unharmed. The driver by his fall was badly hurt about the arms.
