FIRST DAY, Tufsday, March 23. The tempestuous weather that set in on Saturday last had not greatly improved today, a gale of wind blowing and occasional showers ushering in the morning. There were a few changes in the betting since yesterday, Ngaro. and Templeton c ming to shorter odds than any others for the Cup, Traitor remaining at about his chronic price to 1. Tripolis was scratched for the Cup early in the morning, Spritsail at 12 o’clock, and Pertobe at 12.30 p.m. Faugh-a-ballagh was scratched for the Maiden Plate at 10.10 a.m., and at the same time Mertyman was withdrawn from all his engagements, and Sir William from the Publican’s Handicap. At 12.10 p m. Bothwell was scratched for the Maiden Plate The list keepers were cleared away from their usual positions by the saddling paddock, and took up positions immediately opposite the grand stand. About five minutes after time the horses came out for the Maiden Puate, of 80 sovs. The second horse to receive 10 sovs from the stakes. Entrance, 3 sovs. One mile and a-half. For horses that have never won an advertised prize exceeding L 25. Weight for age. Captain Hutchison’s b c King Phillip 3 years, 7st lib (Batty) 1 Mr F. W. After one break away, the five were despatched on pretty even terms, the Irishman cutting ont the running, and making the pace pretty fast. Passing the stand the first time Hercules was seeond, Wild Deer third, the fgel ring fourth, King Philip last’ These positions were held for the next quarter of a mile, when the King overhauled the Ada, gelding and Wild Deer, and at the same time Hercules crept up to Daniel S- S?,. Comb g infc£ > the last half-mile King Philip gradually drew away from the two hmdermost and up to the leaders, and the two-year-old falling back, Hercules and Oapt. Hutchison s colt came on together amid pat excitement. King Philip was going in beantuul style, audhad plenty in hand as well, and Batty landed him a winner after a good , b y a iength. Daniel was a poor third, Wild Deer and the Ada gelding almost distanced. Time, 2min. 53sec7 The Dunedin Cup.—A handicap of 300 sovs with a sweepstake of 10 sovs each. At the second attempt a good start was effected, and passing the stand Ngaro, Earl of Lynne, and Hercules were abreast, leading ; Traitor and Atlas lying last, behind Templeton, Castaway, and Right Bower. Traitor and Atlas, who both appeared to be coining at the last half-mile came in a bad third and fourth ; Castaway fifth ; Hercules s’xth ; Earl of Lynne seventh; and Ngaro an ignominious last.
