SPORTING NOTES.
By Pegasus. At the Forbury this morning Sam Haines was first on the ground, as the darkness cleared away, with Templeton, Hercules, and Wlfin Ring. The two first were soon stripped and went a rattling gallop three times round, Elfin King, inhis clothing, going only twice. Hercules lay three or four lengths behind Templeton for a mile and a-quarter, going well within himnalf, and was then let out and passed his older companion in the last round. Both went as strong as lions, finished fresh, and scarcely sweated at alb Bob Reay on Traitor, and followed by Tadmor, Sonnambula, and Daniel O’Rourke, next appeared on the scene, and after a bit of walking exercise Traitor and Sonnambula, the footer with her clothes on, started together. After going once round the filly dropped out, and the two-year-old, also in olotnmg, was picked up by Traitor and went with him till “*® G U P distance was completed by the old horse. The juvenile Hibernian skimmed over the ground in beautiful style, and until ho had gone more than a mile Traitor could not keep near him; but Reav pushed the Cup horse along, and the distance beginning to tell on the youngster Traitor was all over him at the finish. The latter was in good form and went very strongly, but his “ foghorn ” was audible a long distance off; still, if this failing does not interfere with the “ order of his going ” more than it_ appeared to this morning, I shall think him very dangerous on the Cup day. Between Daniel O’Rourke and Hercules there should be a hard tussle for the Maiden Plate, if Mr Delamain’s colt is sent for it. The first of Capt. Hutchison’s team to show up was the of Lynne, who did a tearing, rampant gallop three times round by himself, pulling and yawing as if he couldn’t go fast enough to please himself l —and I think that’s just what’s the matter with him. He was blowing, too, as if he didn’t half like so much to do at a time. King Philip and Spritsail had a two-and-a-half-mile spin, together, Stanton riding the mare, and Batty the colt. Spritsail had him in hand the whole time, and the whip had to be used on King Philip at the finish, Putting this and the fact of the Karl’s being .sent by himself, leads me to look upon Spritsail as the Cup candidate from the Anderson’s Bay stable. I was disappointed at not seeing Right Bower and Barwon at work, they only being walked about and then taken home. Atlas had a steady gallop by himself, creeping over the ground in his quiet way—not making much show, but finishing as well as he started. Cutts had Ngaro and Parawhenua out, and as soon as they were stripped the filly went off at a good pace, her stable companion joining her after the first round, and both going together twice round. Ngaro’s was a grand gallop, she looking fresh and strong, and able to run away from Parawhenua at any time. Tripolis did a steady gallop of a, mile-and-a-half with Maid of Arrow; and Bismarck went roundby himself three times. Envy did a solitary spin, making the pace very fast in the last round; and Kathleen did son e steady work. Bothwell, Gamecock, Wild Deer, Young Leamington, two of the Master Rowe youngsters, and several of the hurdle racers were on the ground, but did not do much while I was there. Castaway walked only, so I had not the chance of seeing him stripped. Pertobe did not show up at all, unless he was on the beach There is no variation in the betting market, with the exception that Sir Tatton is rather a warm favorite for the sticks—even money only is to be had about him for the Hurdle Race, and 2 to 1 for the Steeplechase. He was put this morning, but did no work.
