The attendance at these races was estimated at between 1,500 and 2.000 persons. Of the racing the ‘ Times,’ to which we are indebted for the particulars given below of the two principal events, says everything seemed to be fair and square, except the Members’ Plate, as to which there was pretty general dissatisfaction, the impression being that the horses did not run on their merits. ■ The Hurdle race of 50 so vs. was a walk* ov ®r /or Banjo, Mistleto arriving in the saddling paddock ten minutes after Banjo had started. Handicap of 100 sovs., 2 miles. Mr R. Barton’s ch g Exile, aged, Bst. 101b. (uiEyno) 1 Mr A. M‘Kay’s b’ g Unknown, 6 yrs, 7st t> * , . lOlbs. 2 Mr Paterson b blk g Blackbird, aged, 7ot3lba- 3
Betting : 3 to 2 Exile ; 2 to 1 Ringleader and Unknown; 5 to 2 Ada gelding; 4 to 1 Blackbird ;sto 1 Merryman; 10 to 1 Koro; Selection was scratched. ’ This, of course was the event of the day, more money changing hands en th's race than on all the others put together. From the time the weights were published, Exile had been first favorite, but Unknown, Ringleader, and the Ada gelding were also much fancied. At the start, Exile went to the front, ringleader and the Ada gelding being in close attendance, the others a couple of lengths behind. Opposite Shalders’ Exi'e increased his lead to six lengths, and Unknown ran into second place, Blackbird a length behind him, and the others nowhere. Coming up the straight, the rider of Unknown made a determined attempt to catch Exile but could never get nearer than three lengths, and in this order they passed the post, .Blackbird a length behind; Unknown, third ; Koro, fourth ; Ada gelding, fifth; Ringleader, sixth ; and poor old Merryman, a long way behind, last of all. Time, 3 min. 49 secs. Members’ Plate of 60 sovs. 11 mile. Welterweight forage, and to be ridden by members of any Racing Club in New Zealand. M^W. M’Kay’s b m Medora,-aged (Owner) ... I Mr R, Barton’s ch g Exile, aged ... ... 2 Mr Ri Barton’s b g Ivanhoe, aged 3 Unknown was scratched. Mr Barton declared to win with Ivanhoe. Betting: 2to 1 on Exile, 6 to 4 against Medora, even money on Ivanhoe, sto 1 against Comet. The flag fell to a very bad start, Exile being about eight or ten lengths behind the other horses. When the flag fell, Ivanhoe rushed to the front, but Medora collared him opposite Shalders’, and from there to the tnrn .for the straight they raced together. The rider of Ivanhoe, finding his horse beaten, shouted to Barton, the nder of Exile, to br ng up his horse, but by some strange fatality Barton had got some dirt thrown in his eyes from the hoofs of the other two horses, and was taking it very quietly, deluding himself with the vain idea that it was Iv .nboe, and not Medora, that was sailing ahead up the straight. Barton hearing Hedge calling for him, took Exile up ahead of Ivanhoe. Barton row made a determined effort to catch the mare, but without avail, as she passed the post two lengths ahead of Exile. The rider of the latter horse received quite a storm of yells and derisive oheem as he rode into the saddling paddock. Hedge, the rider of Ivanhoe, offered to back Exile against Medora for Ll5O to L2OO, for the same distance and conditions, bat the people only yeljed the more. Time, 2 min. 41 secs. A protest was entered against the payment of the sweepstakes for the second horse to Exile, on the ground of dishonest riding.
