FISHERY LEASES.
To the Editor. bra.—Some time since a lease of 2,000 acres of land was granted, at a nominal rental, to JVleisrs Harding and Co. for a term of twentyone years; the purpose of the lessees being the establishment of a fishery. 6 As public property is involved in the abovenamed venture, I shall be glad to learn what steps have been taken in the matter, as I feel assured success must attend any well-matured scheme, such as is contemplated by Messrs Harding and Co. J f the fishing trade at Wick be any guarantee, where one firm alone employs 10,000 people and turns over in connection with this branch of commerce LSOO 000 per annum, we may hope in a proportionate degree tor similar success in a New Zealand hß i ei T-. T he value of foreign cured fish imported to New Zealand amounts to many thousands of pounds yearly, and a heavy duty is levied upon it; so f think it is nothing but right that everything in the nature of a cheap and duty free supply of food should be encouraged, I hope I shall not be considered impertinent by Messrs Harding and Co., as I write entirely in the interest of the public.—l am, &c., t» j< nr v<, IwqoIREB. * Dunedin, March 5.
