GOOD TEMPLARISM.

The Hon. S. D. Hastings, P.E.W.G.T., arrived in town on Saturday, and the same evening was welcomed by the Dunedin district and subordinate lodges at a conversaaione at the Temperance Hall, D.D.G.W.C.T, Bro. Jago presiding. Yesterday evening the hon. gentleman delivered an address on temperance in the hall in thepresenceof alargeaudience, who listened to his remarks withgreatattention. The hon gentleman took advantage of the opportunity to deny the accuracy of some statements that had been made concerning himself. The Press Association’s telegram to the effect that he had given great offence by preaching on temperance in the Wesleyan Church at Christchurch was foully false. He had been pressed to preach, and had intimated to the pastor of the church that his subject would be temperance. The statement of the Auckland correspondent of the ‘ Guardian,’ which was calculated to lead people to believe he (Mr Hastings) was an adventurer, he answered by producing to the meeting letters of introduction from the President of the United States, given him at the commencement of his present mission; and from the Governor of the State of Wisconsin, from the Attorney-General and Premier of Ontario Provnice, and from the |Minister of Finance for Canada.
