CLUTHA RAILWAY BRIDGES.
A statement is made editorially, by the ‘Bruce (Herald' to-day, which we hope will prove to be incorrect. Many doubt* ’less know the railway bridges over Salmond’s Creek, the Tokomariro River, and the Woolshed Creek. These bridges are all built of timber, and have only recently been finished, and the permanent way laid over them. To all appearanco they are sound, substantial structures, but the ‘Herald’ learns that a recent inspection has decided that much of the timber, of which they are composed, is not likely to last long; in fact, that a very short time will see it rotten This report (continues our contemporary), ■Sen, kave heard on very good authority. What makes matters worse in this case ia, that, under the terms of their contract, the Messrs Brogden have put the timber into the bridge under Government supervision, and, accordingly, the Government it is which is responsible for the present condition of these bridges. That is to say, the Government will have to take over the works as they now are, and will he obliged, true, to commence rebuilding t«e bridges aforesaid before very long.
