The dispute between the ‘Star’ and the Typographical Society, relative to the introduction of girls into its printing office, has resulted in the ‘Star ’ defying the* Society and keeping the girls. The Society has published an advertisement declaring that the ‘Star’ office is “closed ”to all Society men. Two or three of tho ringleaders in tho‘‘Star’ were discharged. There has been no strike, and none have left of their own accord, although some Society men are employed. The action com menced against Captain Casey, owner of the steamer of the steamer Lily, for L 1,500 damages, arose this wise.- The plaintiff, Mrs Clarke, with her infant, was sitting near the boiler on the steamer, when two tubes burst, and the scalding water poured over her and the child. Both have been laid up for some weeks, but are now recovered. Damages for the injury are laid at Ll,ooo, and loss of her services at LSOO. Captain Casey offered to compromise the matter at a low figure, but she declined. The case excites much interest and amusement, the defendant being the claimant in the celebrated ship Militiades salvage case. Wellington, February 15. . Mr James Davis, one of the principal clerks in tho Audit Department, a most efficient officer and very popular man, died suddenly from heart disease. He had only just returned from a trip on leave to Auckland, and leaves a wife and nine children. The ‘ Post ’ has a warm article on Dr Stuart’s opposition to a foundling hospital in Dunedin, and says, “ Dr Stuart must believe human nature worse than it is if he thinks that any girl’s virtue is influenced by the consideration of the possible fftto of her possible offspring.” E, J. Wakefield, M.H.R., was to-day fined L 5 for drunkenness. Napiee, Fobruaiy 16. The immigrants per Hudson were all engaged yesterday, excepting fifteen married couples, with large families.
