RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT, PORT CHALMERS.
Tuesday, February 16. (Before T. A. Hansford, Esq., R.M.) Ship Desertion.—Jacob Dill, au articled seanian belonging to the ship Margaret Galbraith , charged with deserting on the Bth inst., pleaded guilty, and in defence stated his reason for deserting was that ho was half starved on boam the ship, and on the passage out tire captain threatened to blow up the ship, and he did not consider his life safe.—His Worship informed the accused that if. he had any complaint to make he should have come on shore and seen a magistrate. Accused had adopted a similar line of defence to others belonging to the same vessel who had deserted, and ho could place no reliance on such statements. He ordered the accused to be imprisoned for twelve weeks, the captain to have the option of taking him out of gaol when ready for sea,
