Tho s.s, Taranaki sailed this afternoon for the Northern Ports. 1 The brig Pakoha with a full cargo of sawn timber from Stewart’s Island, sailed up this morning with a fine N.E. wind.' She left Stewart’s Island on the 11th. The s.s. Easby, from the North, arrived at the Heads at 12.45 a.m., but it being ebb tide she will remain there until this evening, when she will steam up alongside the hulk California to discharge.
ARRIVAL OF THE GARELOCH,
Tiie ship G arelcch, which was reported in our last issue as having arrived at the Heads with rcarlet fever on board, v/as towed up as far as the quarantine ground yesterday morning. The Board of Health proceeded down to the Heads in thernorning, and in answer to the questions. Captain Greenwood reported there were I*2 saloon passengers, 305 immigrants, and a crew of 42 all told. The first case of sickness occurred on the oth of December, and ended fatally on the Ist of January, while the last case showed itself on the 3rd of the present month, and the patient is still suffering. There have been five deaths --three from scarlet fever, «ud two from dropsy, the latter cases being confined to children. The total number of fever cases has been eight, and there are still five cases in the hospital on deck. The utmost precaution has been taken to prevent the spend of the disease. The clothes and bedding of those who died was destroyed, and a watch kept day and night to prevent communication on the part of the other passengers with the hospital. There are now twenty-six; other passengers suffering from cold and debility. The officials on hearing this state of things at or,.;e ordered the ship into quarantine. The Gare]'ioh is a fine iron ship of 1,177 ton.-, is commanded by Captain Greenwood, and has made a splendid passage of 7!) days from port to port, and 091 days from laud >o land. She left Gravesend*on the 23rd of November, and discharged her pilot at the Downs at 8 p.m, on the same day. The first day had a N.E. wind, which shifted next dav to the southward; then had light, variable winds until the 27th, when she got a S.W. wind, which increased to a gale on the 28 th, with high sea and violent squalls until the' 30th, when it moderated. At 10 a.m. on the same day picked up a boat containing fourteen men and a boy, the only survivors of the steamer La Plata, which had foundered in the Channel the day before. _ At noon put them ou board the steamer Antinor, hound for London, being then about thirty miles from TJshant.
