Alas for fame ! This is the way the ‘ Chronicle ’ dismissed eir James :—“ ‘ Governor’ Russell, of New Zealand, and Mr Fergusson took their departur for the Fast, yesterday.”— * Chronicle,’ December 24th Though Bir "James came here attended by a most gentlemanly valet, he did not save hj s 'unity from an -merieau tell. ’To the •ustom here wiib the railsvay folks to tout f or business, and strang r who arrives in the city is at once but'ouholed, and al m ot forced to buy tickets for a line he knowi >thimr of, or may not care to travel on. These toutsrs are very smart felloes. On of them went after -ir Junes an I talked him into ibe be i* f that he was a greit railway u-»goate \vh i, having beard of ihe arrival f the distinguished and illustrious v sit< r. to- k the earliest opportunity of calling upon urn, with a view of giving directions for hj s omforc. He assured Si James that every ateniinn would be paid to him, that his Hriti L uri-j ml ices would not he tou hedupon the raw, that, in fact, the lion of England would be made so coiuiorta' 1. he would nave no chance if alarming the country by an angry growl. ‘ s a mark of respect to vSir James, he had, with hia own hands, brought the tickets ecesaary to his safe conduct across the con tment. sir James w«s delighted, the sugarcoated bait was swallowed, and ’he sharp runner pockettd the coin and commission that was lovely to behold. Fancy Sir Jame’s rage when he discovered that he had been patronised by a sharp Yankee only one remove from a c bby. Fancy, also, the mild and gentle protest which he would lodge with his gentlemanly valet.— ‘ Kew Zealand Herald’s ’ correspondente.
