Thursday, February 11. (Before T. A. Man a ford, Esq., R. M., and Mr A. M 'Kinnoo, J. P.) Ship Dfsertion.— George Ramsay, who had been on remand for a week, was again brought up, charged with deserting from the shi 'Auckland. It will he remembered that on the last occasion hj s Worship, in order to administer some punishment to the accused without degrading him by connection with the hard labor gang, remanded him for a week. As Captain Stevens was now willing t 0 take him, the Bench, after cautioning and informing the accused that he would be severely punished if he again attenii ted to de.seit, ordered him to he put on hoard his ship.—Thomas Maylar, an apprentice belonging to the ship iSophia Joachim, was charged with deserting from that vessel, but, as Captain Johnson was willing to take him hack, the Bench ordered him to be put on board. Absent without Levve.— John Smith was charged with being absent from the ship City of Vienna without leave. —John Crocket, master of the ship i 'ity of Vienna, said the accused was an articled seaman, but his name on the articles was John Joi.es, and the mark against that name on the articles referred to the accused. On Saturday last, when witness was coming ashore, accused came with him. as he wished to see a doctor, but since that time he had not been on board the ship.—ln detence, the accused denied that he had ever signed the ship’s articles, or that he ever made the mark against the name of Jones. He was taken on board the ship at night, and had been ill-used on the voyage by the second officer.—ln answer to the Bench, Captain Crocket stated that his vessel would likely remain in harbor for about one month. *The Bench sentenced the accused to four weeks’ hard labor. PETTY Thekt.— Richard Barratt pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing one tin of preserved milk, of the value of one shilling.— Fiom the evidence of Hie chief steward of the ship Auckland, it appeared the accused was engaged t-> help the cook, but there not being much for him to do, he was told to go down the lazaret to remove some stores. Shortly afterwards, when witness went into the gallev, ho found a tin of preserved milk, which he acknowledged to have btken. Upon another occasion, when accused was vown the lazaret, witness saw him with a bottle of sherry in his band.— The Bench sentenced him to four weeks’ hard labm - , Ili kgally on Board. — Henry Gorrey was charged by Captain Stevens with being on board the ship Auckland on the 9ih lust., without leeve. From the evidence of Captain Stevens it appeared that last night, when going into the ship’s forecastle with Constable Carter, he found there accused, who stated he had got permission from one of the crew. Accused had been iu gaol with one of his men. Upon making inquiries the whole of the crew denied giving bimpermiss on.—The accused, in answer to the Bench, stated he came out of prison on Thursday, and had been at work, but not being able to get his money asked permission to sleep on board, as he did not like going to an hotel without money. He was working up till last evening.—The Bench told the accused that he was liable to be imprisoned for six months, but as ne had been at work since coming out o r gaol, they would upon this occasion discharge him.
