THE INTERPROVINCIAL CRICKET MATCH.
To the Editor. SIR, —Though not now a resident of your Province, I have, from past association with them, always felt an interest in your cricketers. As a spectator of the late match, I can, to a great extent, endorse the remarks made by your reporter in last night’s issue. I was pleased to see him defend the Otago team from reflections that appear to have been made against them. His reference to Tait was, I venture to think, rather ungenerous, seeing the latter was put to field where he considered himself quite out of place, and even there acquitted himself creditably. He should also have stated that it was explained on the ground that Godby’s arm was too bad to permit of his going on to bowl. The defeat Otago experienced could not have been avoided, so there should be no bones made about it. With our players I regret that one ot the Christchurch newspapers Ihould have thought fit to speak so sneeringly of some of the Otago team. The youth who reported the match is a tyro at his business, and his faults must be set down to his inexperience. He displayed a facility of using poetical quotations and making fanciful allusions, and veiy little knowledge of the game. The Otago cricketers should take no notice of remarks generally condemned as being out of taste. —I am, &c., J. H. E. Dunedin, February 6.
