Christchurch, February 3. The man John Mercer, charged with the murder of Isabella Thompson at Lyttelton, was brought up before the Resident Magistrate yesterday. The evidence given at the Coroner’s inquest was repeated ; the prisoner being defended by Mr O’Neill, of Joynt and O’Neill. He reserved his defence, and was formally committed for trial at the next session of the Supreme Court. Wellington. February 3. Another death has occurred amongst the Berar’s passengers at the Quarantine station. The Humboldt’s passengers are all landed, and seem to be a fine lot of people. Mr James Osgood, formerly of the Empire Hotel at Dunedin and here, has returned from America, and intends to settle again in New Zealand. In the Police Court to-day, a man was remanded on a charge of attempting to stab another.. The ship Jessie Headman, wool laden, is hauled into the stream and ready to sail. Hokitika, February 3. A large public meeting of the ratepayers, held last night in the Town Hall, carried resolutions urging on the Borough Council to enter into negotiations with the Kanieri Water race Company for supplying the town with water without delay.
