ANNUAL MEETING OF THE ATHENAEUM.

The annual meeting of the subscribers to th«s Athenaeum was held in the lower hall of the Institution- last evening, Mr Lubeoki in the chair. The room was crowded with members. Mr D. R. Hay, hon. secretary, read the report, the balance sheet of which we published in a recent issue. The report stated that the number of subscribers was 1 009, showing an increase of 216 over the previous year. Three hundred and forty-one new books had been added, as well as a number of new magazines, and the library now contained 10,000 volumes. A smoking room, and chess, draughts, and card rooms had been furnished. The salary of Mr Black had been increased to L 275 per annum. The “free table” had been abolished, together with a number of books and magazine to which objection had been made. After a wrangling discussion, Mr Garrick moved “That the report be adopted, and that the thanks of this meeting be tendered to the retiring Committee for their past ser- M vices, which, on the whole, have been satisfactory ; but we regret their excluding on theological grounds certain books and periodicals presented gratuitously to the Institution.” Mr El. 8. Fish, jun, seconded the motion, proformd. ■ Mr Cameron moved as an amendment that all the words after “past services” be omitted. After another edifying discussion, the amendment was carried. The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year : —Vice-President, Mr W. F. Blair; treasurer, Mr J. Logan; secretary, Mr Wilding; auditor, Mr Halliwe!l. The ballot for nine members of committee resulted as follows Messrs A. I). Luhecki (161 votes), R. Stout (140), Profe-sor Sale (118), Rev. R. L. Stanford (136), D. R. Hay (87), E. B. Cargill (85), W. D. Stewart (83), H.,S. Fish, jun. (83), andJ. Caldwell (73). The meeting did not terminate till past one o’clock this morning.
