TO-DAY’S PLAY.

Christchurch, January 29. The match was resumed at 11.45 this morning, with glorious weather, a light N.E. wind and warm sun, with not a cloud to be seen. Fowler and Sweete, notout yesterday, appeared at the wickets, facing the bowling of Downes and Lambert. Fowler took the first over from Downes, his last ball Sweet skied to long leg, and Sampson ran well for it and would undoubtedly have secured it but for an obstruction on the of the scorers’ tent, which compelled him to make a detour. Five were run for it. Singles followed ; some nice fielding being shown by Rhodes at cover. Off Lambert’s third over Sweete brought one well round from his shoulder to leg, getting 4. Exactly at noon Sweete cut Downes to cover for a single, which caused 300 to be proclaimed, amid cheering from the crowd. Lambert bowled a maiden, and Fowler drove Downes to the off for a couple, snicked one to square leg, got a single off Lambert, and hit Downes’s first hard to leg for three. Fowler got another three by a capital leg hit, but the first ball of Downes’s next over Sweete skied high to the on, where Glen, judging it well, secured it. 8-20—815. Lambert in the first ball of his next over was no-balled, and in his next over Fowler gave an easy chance to Downesin the slips, which the Otago captain would not take. The batsman marked his sense of the let-off by driving Lambert clean down the ground for four. Fuller, who joined Fowler, played very carefully, but gave a chance at le» to Rhodes which was not taken. Glen relieved Lambert, and Paramor, Downes. The disposition of the Otago men is the same as yesterday, but Fulton is long-stopping and doing so most creditably. The Otago fielding is a great improvement on yesterday. 2.12 p.m. Fuller is continuing to play well; he drove Glen off his glove to the on for a couple, but the next ball he hit up, Collinson catching it nicely. 9-11—338. Moore, the last man, joined Fowler at 12.40, the latter playing most carefully, placing his hits with great judgment, and making some clean off drives, which are evidently his best hits, and sending Glen’s short-pitched balls to leg for threes. At 1.10, Moore, who did not show any play, having let pass many punishable leg balls, hit G’enup behind, where Fulton secured him. Fowler carried out his bat after playing a most creditable innings. The features of the Otago play this forenoon were the long-stbpping of Fulton, who only let pass a couple of byes, and Sampson's fielding at cover and long leg. He fielded several hard hits really beautifully, amid general applause. The bowling of Glen and Paramor was also good. Canterbury’s innings closed for 354, the largest innings made in any Interprovincial match. The scores are as follows Canterbury. (First Innings.)
