FIRE AT STRACHAN’S BREWERY.
A fire broke out in Strachan’s Brewery Pitt street, about twenty minutes after six o’clock this morning. It originated c ose to the mash tub, which stood near the furnac'', a d was first discovered by John Millar, o-l larman, who sleeps on the ptemise-t and was awoke by a crackl ng noise. He jumped out of bed, partly {dressed himself, and alarmed Mr Strachan, who lives close to the brewery. Millar went through the building at about 10.50 p.m. yesterday, according to custom, and retired to rest, feeling satisfied that all was right, and P. Hussell, copperman, states that taey had been brewing yesterday, and that he drew off the fires en 3 and 4 p.m, leaving no ashes. The building was an old one, consisting of wood and iron, and the flames were confined to the brewery, which was de troyed. Tha origin of the fire is attributed to the spontaneous combustion of six bags of patent malt that were delivered at half-past six yest rday evening, and stored close to the wall where the fire bro ,; e out. The iusurano s are— Royal, L2OO on the building, L2OO on the stock, and LIOO on the fixtures, total, LSBO. Standard, LSOO, in a lumu sum, on building, stock, and fixtures. The estimated value of the building, stock, *c., is L 1,500 ; and Mr trachan has not yet been able to estimate bis loss.
