HARBOR BOARD.
At a meeting of *hia body this afternoon the principal discussion was upon the report of the Finance Committee, which recommended that Mr Simpson’s whole and undivided time should be devoted to his duties as Engineer to the Board. The Government asked that Mr Simpson should superintend the completion of the works initiated by him, viz., light railways, and Naseby and Waipori sludge channels, and it was stated that Mr Simpson was himself anxious to carry on the railway works initiated by him. The report of the Committee was adopted. On Mr Tewsley’s suggestion, the Finance Committee were authorised to take steps, if they saw fit, to place LIO.OOO worth of debentures on the Loudon Stock Exchange. Mr MM ermid objected, on the ground that the additional power was premature. The name of Mr E B Cargill was added to the Finance Committee. On the tenders f r jetty extension being rccjive !, it was stated that Mr Pioudfi ot’a had not been handed in until 1.7 p m., when, according to the advertisement, the time fir receiving them w>s noon. Mr Gillies also stated that it was five minutes past twelve o’clock before he l»-f- the building.— Mr Proud oot wis sent for, and stated that his tender wrs written out at about 11. £O, that he came to the Council rooms perhaps a little after twelve, but he could iiOt say exactly, and could find no tenuerbox. The advertisement was a little vague. He was always in the habit of tendering sharp, and was not particular what was done w th his tender.—Mr Proudfoot’s tender was not entertained. The tenders for the jetty extension were opened as follows ;—J. Lormack and Co., Ll2 943; J. B. Blair, Mosgml, L 17.254 17s 4d ; Hawkins and Co . Lyttelton 1.12 651 9s 7d. Connor and M‘K iy telegraphed th fc they would not tender, as they were connected with Hawkins and Co. The enueis were referred to the Wo ks Committee, wi hj power to act after consulting with the Engineer. The engineer’s recommendation that an inspector of works as L 6 a week, and a draughtsman at L 4 a week should be employed, was referred to the Works Committee for report
