Wellington, for Northern Ports, January 15. The s.s. Wanganui arrived from her usual Southern trip at 12.30 p.m. 1 yesterday, having left the Bluff at 7-50 p.m. on Saturday. The schooner Owake and brigantine Seagull, both with full cargoes of timber from Havelock, arrived ou Saturday and passed up to Dunedin. The brigantine Swordfish, with a full cargo of timber, arrived on Saturday evening from Port Esperance, which she left on the evening of the 31st nit. The E.R.W.S. Vire took her departure for Auckland on Saturday afternoon. Before leaving, a large party of ladies and gentlemen were entertained on board. The N.Z. Company’s s.s. Wellington, svith the San Prancisco mail, arrived alongside the railway pier at 5.30 x>.m. yesterday. She left Manukau at 6 p.m. on the sth, crossed the bar at 5 a.m. on the Gtli, arrived at Taranaki at 8 p.m., and left at 10 p.m. same night; reached Nelson at 5.30 p.m. ou the 7th, Picton at 5 a.m. on the Bth, Wellington at noon, Lyttelton at 6 p.m. on the 9tb, leaving the last-mentioned port at 8.30 p.m., and arrived as above. Experienced strong head winds, with heavy sea, to Wellington, and from thence to arrival light fair winds and fine weather. Passed the barque Freetrader at 0 a. m. on Sunday, standing to the northward. We thank her purser, Mr Willcox, for report and files. The American war steamer Swatara arrived from the Chatham Islands yesterday afternoon, having on board Mr Edwin Smith, the chief astronomer, and party, who had been stationed at the Chathams for observing the transit of Venus. Mr Smith succeeded in getting some excellent direct observations, and 13 photographs were taken, eight of which are particularly good. The Swatara left Port Chalmers on December 30, with a strong N. E. gale, which, upon Rearing the island, shifted to the N. W., and increased with thick, hazy weather. Sighted the land on the 3rd, lay to under the lee all night, and went into Whangaroa next morning, took on board the party and instruments, and left for Port Chalmers on the 6th, and arrived as above. A young man named George Banky, whose parents are supposed to be li.’iag in Canterbury, was drowned there about a month since. It appears, that while he was attempting to cross a lagoon on horseback, his stirrup-leather broke, which caused him to fall from his horse into the lagoon.

She entered Torres Channel at daylight on Sunday morning. Deports all well. Two deaths occurred on the voyage.
