THE CALEDONIAN SPORTS.
To-day’s sports, arranged by the Caledonian Society for the benefit of the Benevolent Institution, commenced at half-past two o’clock. The weather was beautiful and the ground in good order, and the number of entries for the various races gave rise to some exciting contests, There were 2,500 people on the ground at three o’clock, and increasing in number every minute, 'i he cards of the games were again printed by Mr F. Humffray, of George street, and were excellently got up. The first event was the Handicap Eace, 220 yards.—Prizes, L 3, L2, and El. Heats. C. Bennet (8 yards) 1 Murphy (7 yards) 2 W. J. Burke (6 yards) ... 1 ■> S. Brooks (7 yards) ... ) There were twenty-four entries for this race, and the competitors ran in three heats of eight each, the first and second of each heat running off in the final one. For the first, a double start was made, Drake (scratch) getting off worst, but passing three or four men before half way round. Mercer (8 yards) and Murphy (7 yards) kept the lead till fifty yards from home, when Henderson (7 yards) drew up, and passing Mercer, came in second easily, Murphy never having been beaded. Murdoch (5 yards) came too late, and only got tim'd place. In the second heat, Rennet (8 yards) cut out the running, and led all round, winning easily. A good race ensued for second place, Wain (8 yards) holding that place till two yards from the tape, when Burke (6 yards), who had put on a spurt at his usual place, challenged him; and Wain, tiring, Burke got second place by a few inches. The third heat produced » splendid race Brooks (7 yards) got off badly, and was last, with Westland (5 yards) half-way round. M'Bean (1 yard) was leading them, but Donaldson came away full of running, and won easily. For second place there was a hot contest amongst four of the runners, but Brooks was gradually gaining, and trying all he knew, got second by three cr four inches, Cowie (7 yards), M'Bean and Carey (8 yards), all together next. For the first heat Bennet made the pace hot, and was never caught; Murphy second. Burke could not pass his men till, when three-quarters round, he put on another of his fine rushes and made a dead heat for third place with Brooks. Time, 25,fsecs. Egg and Ladle Pace, for hoys; handicap Heats, Prizes, 10s, 7s, ss, is, Bs, and 2s 6d. J. Leith 1 W. Nicholson 2 J. Lindsay 8 F. Miller 4 D. Grater 5 _ J. Dempsey 6 This was an amusing event, the competitors having each to carry an egg in a ladle the whole distance, which, if dropped, they have to stop and picked up again. There were sixteen entries, and numerous fluctuations place in the running, owing to the eggs being spilt over all the competitors. J. Leith and F. Miller won the first heat, W. Nicholson and J. Lindsay the second, and J. Humphrey and D. Grater the third. The final heat resulted as above. Time, 41A secs. Vaulting with the Pole.— Frizes, L2 and LI. D. Auld (9ft. 7in.) 1 F. Muir (9ft. sin.) 2
