Lyttelton, January 2. The Crusader brought sixteen saloon passengers and .‘lB9 immigrants. One birth and seven deaths occurred on the voyage. {From our own Correspondent.) Napier, January 2. A black north-easter set in yesterday and continued to blow fumusly all night. The brig Helen, laden with coal, dragged her anchor and is now in a dangerous position. The Rangatira steamer asks Ll5O to tow her to a place of safety. The weather is moderating, and there will probably be no necessity for assistance. Cromwell, January 1. Geo. Hayes, earner, died from the effects of injuries received through his dray falling over him on the Queenstown road, on the 25th ult. He was under the influence of liquor at the time. Deceased was single, 57 j’eara of age, and a native of the United States, On Sunday a man named George Owens was burned to death at Drybread while sleeping in his hut. The first thing known of the occur rence was the finding of the hut in ashes in the morning. Wellington, January 2. The Customs returns for the year is L 121,330, against L 88,560 for 1873. Auckland, January 2, A heavy N.E. gale is blowing, with a pouring rain. Yesterday all the sports had to be postponed till to-day. Trifling damage to small craft in the harbor has been done by the gale. The Customs revenue at Auckland for the year 1871 was L‘<!21,538. Invercargill, January 2. Glorious weather is being experienced here, and large crowds of people have gone to the Bluff to witness the regatta tliere. Extra trains had to be put on. Memorials to his Excellency the Governor and his Honor the Superintendent, calling their attention to the necessityfor direct immigration ta Bluff Harbor, are obtaining large numbers of signatures.
