The coasters Lloyd’s Herald, Janet Ramsey, mid Isabella, sailed this morning for Gatlin’s The ship Auckland was taken in the Graving Dock this morning to be cleaned and have her bottom recoatcd. The cutter Trial arrived from Waikouaiti yesterday, and discharged wool into the ship Waikato. The s.s. Maori arrived from her special trip iMt evening, and steamed alongside the ship May Queen to discharge wool. The cutter Nautilus, which was purchased by Captain Densem for deep sea fishing, was taken off the slip last night, having received a thorough overhaul, a false keel, and been re coppered. She will be ready to commence her new career about Wednesday next. The brig Prairie, which arrived at the Heads Sunday, and anchored inside waiting for orders, sailed up yesterday afternoon, and was •°wed to Dunedin by the p.s. Golden Age. She left Hobart Town on the 19th inst., had northerly winds the greater part of the passage and armed as above. ° * c on 1 * 1 Company’s s.s. Brace arrived at 0.30 a.m. this morning from Lyttelton and intermediate ports, and stemmed alongside the ahtp Invercargill to discharge wool. On the 36 n she took 160 excursionists to Pigeon Bay returned and took in cargo, and left for her Mturn trip at 7 p.m. on the 28th; called at Akaroa and Timaru, and landed 50 immigrants at the latter port. Left again at 8 p.m., and arrived as above. The R. F. ship Vire returned this morning from her tnp to Campbell’s Island. She left Port Chalmers on November 16, and arrived there on the 20th, and left again on the 27th of December, it being the intention of Captain Jacquemart to call at the Auckland Islands but on account of it blowing heavily from the south-west the idea was abandoned. The Observation party returned by her, and report that the observations were very unsuccessful. Ihe day was very foggy, and only one sight of the sun was obtained, just as Venus had touched the disc. The Vire will remain here about a week. A further trial of Cornish’s life-buoy and buoyant mattrasses was made on December 5 from the steamer Otago, now undergoing a refit Wi the southern wharf in the Yarra basin. Mr Blackwood, Captain M’Meckan, Captain M Loan, and other gentlemen connected with the port, and concerned in all things relating to safety and comfort in passenger traffic, were present dunng the trial, and their opinions were entirely in favor of Mr Cornish’s inven- • 1?* Z* 6 of the crew of the Otago,, by name Albert Bryan, gave himself to these experiwith a confidence which showed his entire faith in the power of flotation ascribed to the buoys and mattresses. These latter are of the ordinary; size for a ship’s berth, and are looped longitudinally and transversely with Webbing, so. as to afford an easy hold in any position. With Bryan (weighing about list) upon It, the upper surface of the mattrasa was. jjist under water. A number of such mattresses fastened together would make a verv buoyant raft. The life-buoys are in two pa> ts connected together with a gutta-percha band upon which the body is sustained. The ouerator, Bryan, speaks of the life buoys in terms of very high praise.
