Port Chalmers, December 26. 4.40 p.m. The Avaby Maid is at the Heads. The ketch Dunedin, Captain VVilliams, from Launceston, arrived this morning, after a long passage of twenty-four days, which is attributed to strong easterly winds and thick weather. She left Launceston on the 2nd, had N.N.E. winds till olf the West Cape on the 11th, when she was blown off the land, and made the West Cape again on the 18th ; put into Port William on the 20th ; left again on the 22nd and anchored under Chasland’s Mistake on Thursday, and under Long Point yesterday; had variable winds along the coast. She is of the following dimensions :—Length over all, 75 feet; beam, 17 feet 3 in. ; depth of hold, 6 feet in. ; and built by Messrs Cullen and Mackay in 1868. Passenger; Mr J. Digby.

Wellington, December 24. Messrs Greenfield and Stewart, a local firm of saw millers, have obtained the contract for supplying timber for the construction of the Government buildings on the reclaimed land.

. December 26. The ship Langston, 104 days from London, arrived with twenty-six passengers. The Langston brings a lot of sheep for Napier and Wanganui. Mr Buchanan, manager of the Bank of Australasia, who has accepted an appointment in the National Bank, has received an invitation to a public dinner, which will be civen to him on January 12.

To-day was observed as a holiday. Monday also will be a holiday with many. Some disappointment is felt that Monday will not be observed as a close day.
