Monday, December 19. (Before J. Bathgate, Esq., R.M.) Drunkenness.— Donald M‘Leod mis:-ed, with a caution. John Adams waa fined ss, with the option of twenty-four hours’ imprison meat; Harry Rickards Ids or twenty-four hours. 1 Theft.— Mary Thomson waa sent to gaol for six months, on a charge of stealing from the house of Catherine Ryder, Clark street one pair boots, one muff, two night-dresses’, and one black hat, of the value of £2 10s. Assault.— Kmile Verchere was charged wi„h assaulting Del plane La vielle ouNovemher 25. There was a second charge against the same defendant of assaulting Maria Lavielle, daughter of the complainant in the former case. Mr MTCeay defended, and Mons. Mcourt interpreted for the Court.— The assault took place on the same day. Bad language had been used on both sides and defendant had struck both daughter and mother. Mr M‘K«ay spoke strongly on the unfairness of the criminal law, and contended that reform was highly necessary. No criminal party could he heard on oath, and when only complainant and the accused were present, whatever was stated by the former must be accepted. Here only the mother (complainant) and her daughter, and defendant and his wife were present, yet the story by the former mint be believed by the Bench, as d fendant was debarred from deny, logit.—His Worship thought that one fine would suffice, the assault being really ooe. Uefendant was ilued 10s and costs, or six days’ imprisonment.
