THE KAIKORAI WOOL FACTORY.

Many persons resident in Dunedin are not aware of the existence ,pf such an industry as the Kaikorai Woollen Factory being so near them, a fact that is accounted for by the quiet way in which Messrs Wilitamsouj lire, and Booth have carried out their new undertaking and brought it to completion. A few days ago we remarked that the factory was ready for work, and on visiting it yesterday found the machinery in motion. The buildings are large and commodious, being about eighty feet square, and well lighted, independent of engined, room and detached bleaching room. The floor is partly of kauri, and where the heavy machinery is placed is of concrete. The engine is very powerful, with plenty of power for further extension of the present plant, to which the firm intend adding as soon as possible. The machinery is driven by shafting running all through the factory and placed at a good height for ensuring safety to thorn em ployed below it. Yesterday there were five looms at work, and the requisite “ mules” and “ carding engines. ” Those of our readers who have visited Mosgiel Factory know the style of machinery employed in this trade, and naturally that used at the Kaikorai is very similar to the machinery at Mosgiel, which has been so often described in these columns. There is still the “finishing” machinery, through which the goods must pass before being' put into the market, t'i be erected, and this Mr Booth expects to have ready within a fortnight. The firm are already employimr, in addition to the hands they brought out from Home, se\ cral learner, and the number of the latter will toon (

be increased. The factory is situated close to the road leading from Kaikorai township to Green Island, and mol way between the tanner' of Mr Flexman and the Halfway Bush road Altogether the works of this firm are worth the time and trouble of a visit, and no doubt Messrs Ure and Booth would extend to those interested the same courtesy shown us yesterday.
