The. returns of the number of the inquest* and the verdicts returned throughout the Colony of New Zealand during the year 1873, compiled by the Registrar-General, show that there were 461 inquests held, and ■he verdicts returned give the startling number of deaths caused by drowning to be 114—viz , accidentally drowned, seventytwo males and nine females ; drowned during drink, three males ; and drowned where there was no evidt nee to show how, twentytwo males and eight females. There were thirty cases of heart disease, twenty-three from natural causes, twenty-one from apoplexy, and the others (the greater part) were from accidents of various descriptions.
