SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

THE MABEL CASE. At a, mee 1114 held at Palmerston on Friday evening last in connection with the races to come off there on New Year’s Day, the Stewards took into consideration the application of A-Ir Stanton, the reputed owner < f t-label, to run the mare at Palmerston, and the action of tdie Dunedin Jockey Club in regard to her disqualification. Messrs Crawford, E. Walsh, and Junes Little were in favour of allowing Mabel to run at the ensuing meeting; and Messrs AflLck, J Johnston, and W. Johnston opposed the mare being entered. Mr Fagan, who occu pied the chair, gave his casting vote against Mabel being allowed to run. The action taken by the Dunedin Jockey Club was therefore upheld. We have been informed that bad n >t the majority of the Steward followed suit wlh the action taken in Dun din the pdncii al subscribers to the muds of the Club w.mtd have withdrawn from it all future support. Referring to the Mabelaffair, the Wellington ‘Post’ commends the Dunedin Jockey Club for tak ng such a firm stand against unfair m ining, and f( r inflicting substantial punishment where it thought the facts justified such a course, and adds :—“ We trust the members of the Jockey Club and all vers of horse racing will in future discourage large Derby weeps. The influence of sm hj sweeps on the races has been made so appart rib that those who run may read, and that influence is certainly not a very beneficial one.
