VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

The final firing for selection of a representative for the . ortherr, Battalion, Otago Vo lunteers, at the Colonial competitiou at rhe ’■'hames, took place at the Head quarters Range, Limekiln Gul'y, on Tuesday. The weather (says the * North Otago rimes’) was not very pleasant nor very favorable to good shooting, especially at the longer ranges, a light drizzdng rain rendering the atmosphere anything but as clear as could be desired. Of the six who competed, Vol. T. Morris was successful in making one point over the quahlyiug score (83), and becomes the battalion representative. Vol. A. Y. Smith, one of the Oamaru Company’s best shots, was only two points behind him. This may probably be accounted for by the thickness of the atmosphere, owing to the falling rain, at the longer ranges. The following are the scores. 200 400 500 600 Tl. Vol. T. Morris, Oamaru 24 25 19 16 -84 Vol. A. Y. Smith, Oamaru 25 26 14 17—82 Vol. J. Gillies, Otepopo 22 17 19 17 75 Vol. Wm. The firing for the election of representatives at the Colonial Prize-tiring is completed. Only one man, Sergeant Fox, of the Christchurch Artillery, qualified. His score was 92.
