Messrs John Gillon and Co., Leith, have been mulcted in penalties '{amounting to Ll5O for contravening the excise laws by wrongly tilling up certificates accompanying certain liquors. Notice of appeal was given. A child, seven years of age, who was brought before the mayor and ex-mayorjof Chipping Norton, charged with damaging a lock, value Gd, was sent to prison for two days, failing to pay a fine of 10s Gd damages and costs. At Huddersfield, Ben Bradley, a bone boiler and potted meat maker, has been fined LlO for having in his possession meat unfit for human food. The defence was that the meat was intended for pigs, but the inspector declared that it was not even fit lor the food of those animals.
While the steamship Seine was on her last voyage from Yarmouth to London, a number of roughs on board began gambling, and defied the attempts of the officers of the vessel to make them desist. When the Seine arrived at London Bridge the gang made a rush for the shore ; but two of thou were captured, and being brought up at the Mansion House, were sentenced t» three months' hard Labor in default of payment of,fines of L2O.
