Very bad time was kept to-day, the St. Andrew’s Handicap starting at 2 p.m.. in stead of 1 p.m. The Maiden Plate was won by “the certainty,” King Philip, after a slow race, but the winner was scarcely doing anything more than cantering. Mabel, the great “ pet,” was knocked out of the big handicap through a bad start, and the winner turned up in the outsider Kathleen. Several jockeys were fined for riding in wrong colors, and another thing that caused dissatisfaction was the fact that 5s was charged for admission to the stand, whereas it was stated at the sale of the gates, etc., that the authorised charge was 2s fid. Handicap Hurdle Race, of 30 sovs. Entrance, 2 sovs. One mile and a half, over seven flights of hurdles 3ft. fiin. high. Mr H. Gourley’s Kildare was the only entry, so that it was a walk over, Kildare taking half the stake, and the remainder going to form the Hack Race, Maiden Plate, of 20 sovs. Entrance, 1 sov. After the break away, a start was made, all getting away together except May Queen, who reared up at the post and thereby lost about three hundred yards Passing the stand the first time, Lady Glasgow lcd, & King Philip hard held, heading the others This position was kept for a quarter of a mile, when Miss Alfred took first place, King Philip gradually creeping up, and Lady Glasgow falling back. Before the straight was reached the K ng was on level terms with the leader, and although Miss Alfred did her utmost, King Philip won with ease by half a length, £ime, 2min. Slfcsec. This
was the slowest Maiden Plate ever run for on the Forbury course, 2min. 24sec, being the shortest hitherto. After one false start a very bad one was effected, Mabel being left at the post, and consequently never getting within 200 yards of the other horses. Passing the stand'the first time Kathleen led, Faugh-a-Ballagh, Right Bower, and Envy next, Congreve some lengths behind, and Mabel nowhere. After going three-quarters of a mile Kathleen and Envy drew- themselves clear of the other horses, and had the race to themselves. In the straight Envy appeared to be coming, but could not catch Kathleen, who won n good and well-ridden race by a clear half length. Faugh-a-Ballagh was third, Right Bower and Congreve some lengths behind, and Mab.d absolute last. Time, 2miu. 58sec. Selling Race, of 25 sovs. Entrance, 30s. One mile and a quarter. Wright forage. Horses entered to be sold for LSO, to carry 101b over weight for age; for L4O, to carry weight for age ; for L3O, allowed 141b ; L2O, 281b ; LlO, 421b.
