The Western railways are progressing in a satisfactoiy manner, l uring tlie last week a party of Chinese, eighteen in number, have taken a contract for a cut'ing-*—one anci ahalf miles—on the Riverton-Otautau line, and more of the Celestials are to arrive, Mr Bsvvs, the district engineer, has returned from his survey of the Orepuki line, having succeeded in finding a new and much more advantageous route than the original one, which will be the means of saving immense cuttings and e bankmente, although it will at the same time increase the distance by some forty chains.
