A fair amount of business has been transacted through the week just closed, many un-countiv orders haying been received. Transactions with * e -i?f * er i°u of the Province will be further facilitated by the reduction on the rate of carriage which has taken place in some directions in consequence of the prospect of return loadings of wool. But little change has taken mace m prices, speculation being checked by the demand for money for calls in various undertakings that have as yet yielded no returns To this temporary diversion of capital is probably owing the neglect with which some classes of goods have been regarded. Brandy has been more inquired for, and full prices are obtainable; for other spirits quotations are unaltered. The Albion Brewing and Malting Company (Limited) shares are being freely subscribed for. The list has only been open for about a fortnight, and already nearly half of the required shares have been taken up. The Company have been fortunate in securing as shareholders a large number of hotel-keepers and publicans, thus securing the immediate support of a class of shareholders who will be customers of the concern. The liberal terms offered by the projectors have been responded to by the public, and there can be no doubt, with our large, increasing population, that there is ample room ior a thoroughly co-operative brewery, which will doubtless bring the much desiderated beverage within the reach of all classes at a much more moderate rate than has hitherto prevailed. Otago has the best climate for malting ami brewing of any other locality in the Southern Hemisphere, and, considering the direct benefit such institutions have on our agricultural interests, besides the employment of a considerable amount of labor, such an enterprise is entitled to the hearty support of the public at large. We wish the new concern every success.
