Maine, where Madame Goddard was on (he 12th of October, she met with brilliant success, and it is verv rarely that this can be said of any musical entertainment given in that very quiet town It is of course, most creditable to the inhabitants of the place'that it should have been so, because it reflects favorably on their good taste In this country there is an inseparable connection belween theatres and hotels, and the Theatre Royal, tastlemaino, is no exception to |h!s rule. It is stated on undoubted authority that the heart of the‘proprietor “of this establishment was greatly softened' by the unprecedented success of the entertainraent. He approached the basso singer of the evening with a bottle m one hand and a corkscrew m tbe other. “ Sir, will you have a drink ? ” “ No, thank you, sir. Ido not take anything of tbe kind you proffer me.” . you think Madame Goddard would like a drink o’ porter ! I wish you would ju-t step in and ask her.” For there is that kind of tone and style about the great pianist which is not met with in every musical artist who travels, aud the idea of asking her himself was as far distant from the mind of the well-meaning host as it would have been to invite.the Empress of India to look in as she was passing to take pot-luck.
