VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

THE COLONIAL PKI7.E-FIRING. The South District tulles this morning competed at the Green island Range for choice of company’s representatives ; Lieut. Grant, the officer appoiu'e.l, being iu charge. Only live men put in an appearance, and the scoring, with the exception of that made by Vol. P. M'Laren, was very poor. Finer weather for shooting could not be wished for, it being line and calm, with a clear sky, and no wind. As last year the force complain that they have had no time to practise, the firing commencing within thirty days of the regulations being issu d ; but it must be admitted that that enthusiasm which was noticeable amongst our Volunteers twelve mouths ago is now wanting. Last year the whole Province was entitled to forty-eight district representatives, i e . the highest forty eight in the lirst set ; this year there are thirty for Otago and twelve for Southland, which has been appointed a separate district under the charge of Captain Haywood ; while the remaining six arc apportioned to Oamaru. The ranges are—2oo, 4 'O, S(H), and 000 yards, seven shots at each —weapon, long or mod uni nni zlo-loading or Snider-Eutield rille. The following arc the scores of these who this morning made seventy points and over :

200 -100 500 600 Vol. yds. yds. yds. yds. Tl. P. M'Laven ... 25 2(1 10 10 -83 Vol. 1). M'Laren ... 21 25 21. -70 Vol. Manu ... 25 21 18 6--70
