Larceny by a Servant.—fane Henderson pleaded not guilty to a charge of stealing one yellow print dress, of the value nf 20s. from the dwelling-house ot Jac >h Levy on October 20—"un-lnspector vjuilaid: Too Rev air Levy baa told me that he has no wish to pi es <th *. charge. The evidence is very convincing, though the accused has pleaded not guilty, hence the char e of va-graney on the sh-ct. It was more for the girds good that the Hev. Mr Levy had taken action in the matter at all; it was in ord-r to try and get her out of harm s way —Hi-. said the accused had previously been before the Court on a charge of stealing fl >wers from a cemetery. Prosecutor said he did not wish to press the charge. Tne girl had been a servant in his house, aud had taken the dress.—The Sub-lus; ector : From what 1 know of the girl I can state that she is pest re lemotion. .She is incorrigible.—H s Worship ; If there is the slight est hope of her present amendment, it would be well to withdraw the charge; hut if the girl has adapted a lawless-lif git would b; bettor for her if the charge was proceed-; i with. Prosecutor replied that, he aid, in the hope that a severe reprimand might hive a good effect.—His Worship said that as prosecutor had declined to go on with the case, and as the value of the article was only 2(Js he would not object to the ease being withdrawn, seeing that there was another ebarg on the sheet.—'the accused was then charged with having no vi-j hie means of auppirt, Detective Ban had kuovvn accused for some time. The charge of larceny previously referred to having been reported to him he arrested the ac-u —d on .Saturday in a house at the corner of Union and George streets, occupied by a number of the “ Apia’s” gir s. His Worship : Prostitutes?—Witue.-s : They conduct themselves as such.—Mis Worship ; Walking the streets at night ?—Witness : Yes.— His Worship; Importune men?— Witness ; They do. I have seen them at night with a number of young men followin'' them. \he conduct carried on i r the house is something disgraceful.—His Worship observed that to send the girl to prison would be placing her with a lot of "old hands,” and although it had been said she was very bad now, there was no doubt she would come out of gaol worse. Me, howeve , could not. help sending her to gaol until the Legislature saw fir. to provide proper prisons. Bhe was sentenced to thirty days’ imprisonment, his Worship adding that if again brought before him he would have no hesitation in giving her the full term of twelve months’ bard labor.
