THE GOVERNORSHIP OF FIJI.

The telegram referring to Sir Donald M‘Lean as the probable Governor of Fiji is an absurdity. That idea obtained currency among quidnuncs while Parliament was yet in session, but had no foundation either in fact or probability, which latter quality was not even kept in view by the flyers of the canard. Sir Donald M‘Lean has still plenty of work to perform in this Colony, and has, besides, private affairs which we do not think it at all likely he would be disposed to leave deprived of his own supervision. It is, no doubt, a compli ment to him, who has for so many years exercised a large and peace-giving influence over a warlike race of aborigines, to point to him as the man fitted to take in hand and bx-ing under civilised subjection another body of savages, perhaps not less difficult to deal with than the vigorous Maoris have proved themselves to be ; but we are by no means inclined to lose the Native Minister, and we do not think we shall, though we cannot bo blind to the fact that there would be difficulty in finding one so well qualified for such a duty. The mere rumor that such an appointment was probable is one of those generally concurred in testimonials to capacity and. ability which have been so conspicuouein Sir Donald M'Lean. —Southern Cioss.
