The barque Pet, for Hobart Town, was towed to sea by the tug Geelong this morning. , The barque Sunlight, 497 tons, sailed from Now York on August 10, for Dunedin and Wellington. The brig Isabella- was removed from the stream alongside the railway pier to discharge her .cargo of timber. The brigantine Eliza Mary was towed to Dunedin by the s.q. Jane on Saturday evening . and tho Pemnstla towed down from town on Saturday evening, the brigantine Lizzie Gray. The s.S. Wallabi returned from the Bluff yesterday and steamed up to Dunedin. She left here on Wednesday last at noon, got to the Bluff next morning, discharged and reloaded . and sailed on Saturday. ’ The barque Columbus will likely sail for the Bluff some time this week. She has already got a quantity of cargo aboard, consisting of oil, wood, tallow, &c. At the Bluff she is to fill up with wool for London. ; The brig Alexandra, from Mauritius, was ■ towed up to her anchorage off the railway pier this morning. She brings a full cargo of sugar from-the Mauritius; which port she left bn the - 29th August. Had moderate S.E. trades to 28deg. S.; thence variable weather until 85deg. S. on, the 18th of September, when she encoun- ■ tered a gale which carred her to 40deg. S., and moderated on the 25th; thence had N.N.E ‘weather until the 27th, when in 45deg. s] she encountered,, a gale from the N.W. which ' bated for forty-eight hours; then hadN. and ' N.W. ; winds till the Ist of October when she again encountered a heavy gale from the N.W. with heavy cross seas. The gale moderated on the 2nd, and then had moderate westerly winds until the 9th, when another gale from the ■ S.W., with tremendous high sea, was encountered, with a succession on the 10th and on the 12th. . On the last mentioned date, when the ship was hove to on the port tack the sea being very high, she shipped large quantities of water. In the evening the gale having moderated, she bore away, but on ; the 13th inst. it again commenced to blow with heavy weather, and being close on tho coast of . New Zealand headed for the land, and made the S.W. Cape the same day, the ship laboring very heavily all the time. The gale was accompanied with heavy squalls of rain, thunder and lightning. On the 15th had thick weather) with,heavy rain, viuch, at.midnight, increased to a gale, and at. 2 p.m. the wind suddenly shifted from N,N.W. to S.S.E., still blowing heavily. The weather moderated on the 16th • passed .the Solander on the 17th; Dog Island at 6 p.m. same day; ‘had S.W. and N.E, -binds along the coast, and made the Heads' at 5.30 last night. Daring the succession of rough weather, the Alexandra has received considerable demage to her bulwarks, rigging and sails. • AN- AMERICAN WAR STEAMER. The Xf.S. sloop Swatara ; called at the Heads yesterday morning to communicate with the Harbor-master and to land Captain Thomson of the Bluff, who piloted her up the coast. She is one of the finest vessels of the United States navy, quite new, is a full-rigged ship, of 1,180 tons, register, and is fitted with a compound engine of 1,200 horse-power, which Consumes about 24 tons of coal per day. This is the first compound engine that has been introduced into the United States navy, and has proved in every way successful. The average speed of the vessel under steam is between eleven and twelve knots. The Swatara has been expressly fitted out for this expedition, and contains one year’s stores, besides all the necessary and latest improvements instruments. T«* afford accommo- . dation for these the battery has been taken otit with the exception of, two twelve-pound boat howitzers, mounted on the poop-deck, and one sixty-pound Parrot gun on the bow. Fifteen houses were also brought out, three consisting of equatorial, transit, and photographic accom° modation for each party. The commander of tfio vessel is Captain Ralph Chandler, who is held in high esteem by the naval authorities The following constitute the officers : Lieut! G. F. The Swatara has now gone to the Chathams, and after, landing a. party there, will return to Otago in about fourteen days, remain at Port Chalmers a few days, then proceed to Hobart Town, and there lay up for repairs, then proceed to pick up her parties, and return home after making a trip round Cape Horn, touching at Cape Town. °
