CITY COUNCIL.

At last night’s meeting there were present the Mayor, Councillors Beck, Grant, Gibson, Carroll, Beeves, Mercer, Woodland, Walter, and Prosser. A good deal of business was transacted, the following being the principal. A letter was read from the'Under-Secre-tary relative to the correspondence which had passed between the Council and the Government in reference to the expenses of Re* vepue Officer Dumb. The letter stated that the Government did not wish to dispense with the services of Mr Lumb, but would have no objection to the Council appointing an officer of their own. Mr Payletich applied that a portion of the Corporation lease of ground at Green Island or the iaien might be given proposed Piggery Company. r r Mr *l'Pierson, secretary to the Turkish Baths Company (Limited), requested assistance with regard to the necessary water Bupp!y for the baths. It was Stated by the Mavor that the sextons of both Cemeteries had waited upon mm, and asked for an increased rate of pay for Sunday funerals. They stated that large numbers of people attended the funerals when they took place on Sundays, and the grounds were consequently injured.
