The demand for goods has been brisk during the week, especially from the country districts. The markot continues very bare of best* white sugars, for which the demand is considerable. , Fine yellows have been placed at L 34 to L 34 ss. # Teas are in demand, and some heavy transactions are reported, the particulars of which have not transpired. In brandy a bettor feeling is manifested than has prevailed for some time past. No sales of importance h-).ve taken place. The demand for good brands of whisky is active. Several parcels of Qlenury a»>d Campbelton have change.d hands at full prices. The • quotationa.i<MfgGreneva are unaltered. Candles ™ e .» Bhade easier, and are freely offered at is unchanged. There has been a gooddemandfor driedf ruits, andcurranteof good
command 6£d, and sultanas 7d. The market is still overstocked with American salmon, and prices are nominal Hams and bacon, in consequence of scarcity, have made a decided advance, while butter of good quality is hardly to be obtained. The supply of cheese, also, is not equal to the demand, and good qualities realise 7jd to Bd. Oatmeal has risen very considerably, large parcels having been taken at L 24. The demand for potatoes is very great, and in consequence a further advance has taken place. They are not now obtainable under L 9 to LlO per ton. ... r THE SHARE MARKET. Mr Hooper reports that during the past week ratner more than ordinary transactions in the several stocks have taken place, but generally at reduced rates. This reduction is more attributable to the tightness of the money market than to any change in the intrinsic value of the stocks. Present quotations : National Insurance, 30s ; Standard Insurance, 9s to 10s 6d; South British, 50s to 50s 6d. Banks : National, L 3 9s; Colonial, 12s 6d; New Zealand, L3l7s 6d. Mines ; Star of the East, L7ss to L7los ; Elizabeths, L2 ; Lucknow, L2; Arrow Rivers, 7s 6d; Shotover Terrace, 6s. THE LABOR MARKET. Mr Skene reports that the demand during the week has been steady, and suitable servants are readily placed. We are still decidedly short of ploughmen, shepherds, and really experienced servant girls. Wages are as under : Females, from L 26 to L4O ; superior do, L4O, L 45, and L 52. Young girls and hoys, 6s, 7s, Bs, and 9s. Shepherds and ploughmen, from L 55 to L7O. Couples, L 75 to JLBS. The building trade still runs from 12s to 14s; in special oases more money is given. Right road men, quarry, &c., Bs, 9s, and 10s, and scarce. Up-country contracts are ready for all good hands. Hotel servants are asked for.
