EARLY CLOSING.
To the Editor, Sm, —Early closing has been in a state of coma for some time, so far, at least, as outward action and effort arc concerned; but it is evident, on referring to your advertising columns, that its practicability is becoming recognised, and that the to some Utopian idea of retail salesmen getting a half-hoUday on Saturday is at length achieved aud is an ordinary every-day fact among us. A manly and independent course of action at all times meets with respect and support, and there is no doubt Mr Sampson, whil t adding status to his firm by the spirit disp ayed, will prove this movement to be a thorough commercial success, as it touches varied motives in various characters, the tendency of tho whole being to swell the springtide of business that must almost necessarily flow in on his enterprise. This philanthropic action commands the sympathy and support of the writer, who hopes to see it followed up by oth r houses, which can well afford to give the Saturday half-holiday.- I am, &c.: ~ • Yir, : ; Dunedin, ,Qctpber 5.
