Wellington, September 30. The Synod of the Glmrch of England at Wellington commenced its sitting yesterday. The Bishop read a long address, in which he reviewed matters which occupied attention during the late session of the Synod. He dealt with the position of the Church of England in New Zealand ; the establishment of an Appeal Couit to decide all questions arising amongst Anglican churchmen; and the question of an educational system which should not ignore religious instruction.
The lines between Wellington, Wanganui, and New Plymouth have been down the last three days.
. October 1. The flood in the Hutt river forced out of position the 130 ft. long and 14ft. high concrete protecting wall of the Hutt railway, which will nave to be rebuilt. The other damages are confined to a few culverts.
Auckland, September 30. His Honor the Superintendent has proclaimed the 7th October holiday, it being the 105 th anniversary of Captain Cook’s arrival in New Zealand.
Mr Joseph Bennett, the well-known speculator, ’proceeded to Sydney in the steamer Victoria to-day to arrange for the shipment of horses and stock. lie has chartered the steamer Blackbird for the purpose.
Eivertoit, October 1. A party of Maori sealers, from the Wakatipu, arrived yesterday from a cruise to the West Coast with 720 skins.
