PENINSULA RAILWAY.
To the Editor. Sir,— The suggestion of] “Colonist” in last bight’s Star* to 'connect the jiroposdd PemusularJßailway with the-bouthern'l’rtmk Line at Uaversham, is deserving of most careful consideration. Sven without manufacturing a sort of “patent fuel,” there u an unlimited foreign market for the better description of the local, coal, although there are here no doubt great facilities for maun* factoring “patent fuel,” owing to the abundance of tar, &c., obtainable from the gas works at a cheap rate. Extending the line to Uaversham would also materially assist in procuring for it a good share of the Southern traffic, thus helping to relieve the Port Chalmers line from the enormous amount c£ work that will be thrust upon it when the various libes nowiu 'construction are completed. I amaware th. t it-may bd urged that the dredging operations will relieve the Port Kaiilway, but I am convinced they will be found to be a mere “ flea bite-” besides, even with the most extea* sive dredging, four or five feet more water will always be obtaiaable at the Heads. With the prospect of always getting an outward cargo here (especially of coal), the largest class of vessels in existence, would be coming here, in preference to those now employed.—l am, &c , - „ Neptune, Duneam, September 24.
