VITAL STATISTICS.
The following are extracts from the Regfo. trar-General’s report on the vital statistics of the boroughs of Auckland, Thames, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Hokitika during August Auckland, 59 deaths—proportion of deaths to 101)0 of the population, 1.09; Ihamea, 36 births, 9 deaths—proportion per 1000, 1.11; Wei ington, 47 births, 16 deaths—proportion per 1000, 1.51; Nelson, 24 births, 4 deaths —proportion per 1000. 0 70; Christchurch, I „ k' r “ sS ' 25 deaths—proportion per 1000, . 2.4- ; Dunedin, 88 births, 35 deaths-pro- ; portion per 1000, 1.89 Hokitika. 12 births. 5 deaths— proportion per 100l>, I 89. O „P e births Were 31Q in August, against 269 m July, while the deaths were 4 more in number than the deaths in July.* Of th'd deaths, males contributed 53 ; females, 85 ; oj of the deaths were of children under one year of age. The deaths of children under fave years of age, being 49.07 of the whole number ; 25 of these were of children under hve years of age exceeded those in July by cq 1 * ema ' es died aged respectively 65, 6S, and 71 years ; 6 mal*s died between the ages of 65 and upwards, the oldest being 79. °* the above 9 deaths occurred in Wellington, and 3 in Dunedin. The numper of deaths from zymotic diseases is tho ® a “ ea ?^^ u ly. There is a slight increase in deaths from constitutional diseases upon the July deaths, but yet they are fewer they were in June. There were U deaths from phthisis, of which 5 occurred in Dunedin ; they were all deaths of adults of 23 years and upwards—one of the persons dying from that cause being of the age of 67. The deaths being limited to persons of mature ages, leads to the inference that many of them arrived in the Colony with their lungs already diseased. out the Colony north of Canterbury. In Nelson the increase was most ,remarkable, being 14,265 in in excess of the average rainfall in former years.
