An anecdote illustrative of the condition of bcottish prisons thirty-four years ago, is given by Lord Cockbum in his ‘ Journal ’“ We have had gobd specimens of the present condition of some prisons. One man was tried at Inverness for prison-breaking, and his defence was that he was ill-fed, and that the prison was so weak that he had sent a message to the gaoler that if he did not get more meat he would not stay another hour, and he went out accordingly,”
