Messrs Driver, Stewart, and Co., on Saturday afternoon, submitted to public competition the township of Green Island. The attendance was very hirge, and for the greater number of the sections offered the bidding was very spirited, prices in some instances realising equal to L 864 per acre. The sections withdrawn from auction, comprising a number of the choicest frontages to the Kaikorai River, and several very eligible villa sites, are now for sale by private contract. , A meeting of the Bank of Otago (in liquidation) was held at the London Tavern on July 8, Mr A. L. Elder in the chair. The chairman said the business of the bank was transferred on July 1, 1873 —just twelve months ago. The assets then amounted to L 236.931, and of that amount the National Bank of New Zealand took over LI 89,597, leaving L 47.333 to be collected and remitted on account of the Bank of Otago. L 12.500 had been collected, leaving L 35,000 still to be iemitted; but as Mr Larnacb advised that L 15,000 might be considered bad, about L 20,000 along with the L 12.500 remained to be remitted. The cash in London was L 5.174, from which had to be deducted creditors’ claims for L 1,138, so that they could see at a glance what was likely to be available. They would of course like to know what further amount they would receive, and he would have liked to have told them. He could say that he was of the same opinion as in April last—vis., LBlos or L 9 per share would be the total return. Unfortunately there was a dispute with the National Bank ef New Zealand with respect to the notes destroyed by tire at the Bank of Otago in 1865, they being afraid that some of them might come forward for payment. The liquidators fully believed that out of the L 150.600 received by the National Bank of New Zealand they would make a considerable profit.
