Interim 'Kcretary ; Mr Kichard H, Leary. It will readily be conceded that one of tho greatest wants in the principal cities of '-cw Zealand is first class hotel accommodation, to provide which wi I involve a large expenditure. beyond the limits of individual capital This Company is formed for the purpose of erecting in Dunedin a first-class Hotel, similar in character to those existing in the large cities of Europe and America— one which will not only supply existing requirements but will offer special attractions and inducements to tourists and travellers to visit this part of New Zealand. It is proposed that the building to be trscted shall contain 200 Bedrooms, spacious Dining and Drawing Rooms, Library, Private Rooms for families, and all the neces-ary adjuncts of a really first-class Hotel of the kind indicated. An unexceptionable freehold site lias already been secured at moderate cost. It is estimated that the cost of freehold lano and buildings will not exceed L 29.000, and the furniture and fittings L 6.000, thus making the total outlay required about 1-35 000. To meet this cost, a paid-up capital of L2U.000 will be sufficient, as the balance can readily be borrowed at a moderate rate of interest on the security of the Land and Buildings. The profits realised by the leading hotels in London, Paris, Berlin, St. Petersburg, and \merica. average 22 per cent, upon the amount of invested capital From reliable information obtained from competent persons, the promoters of tbe Southern Hotel Company (Limited) are fully persuaded that, und r careful management, the profits from this enterprise will provide a very handsome return for the capital subscribed. Exclusive of revenue derived from tbe hott I business proper, it is estimated that a considerable income will be received in tbe way of rent for the principal portion of the ground floor, which would be readily let for Shops, &c., and would not be required for hotel purposes. The promoters feel that it is almost superfluous to impress upon the citizens of Dunedin the great advantages which would accrue to their city from the successful development of such an enterprise as the one projected. The increase in the number of visitors to Dunedin would inevitably be accompanied by an increase in the vitality of every department of commerce and trade, and would thereby materially augment the prosperity of all classes of the community.
