WASTE LAND BOARD.

The weekly meeting of the Waste Land Board was held to-day ; present—The Chief Commissioner, Messrs Butterworth, Clark, Reid, and Strode.

Messrs Gillies and Street, for Messrs Fletoher and M ‘Gillivray, applied for a license to occupy an island in the Wyndham village reseive, under clause 101. for grazing purposes. Mr Gillies stated that applicants would expend a sum of money in making a road across the swampy piece of ground connecting the so-called island with the land. Adjourned for report. iVlessrs Gillies and Street applied to purchase sections 2 and 4, block 1, Table Hill. Adjourned,, awaiting report of District Land Officer.

Mr William M‘Larn asked permission to const ruct a tramway to ne-mile Creek bush. Mr Wheeler appeared for applicant. Refused, in the meantime.

Messrs Connell and Moodie, fo*' Missrs Herbert, Howat, and Co., aoplied for a sawmill lease of eighty acres of block 14. Glenkenich, to complete deficient area. Referred to Hanger to report on. Mes-rs Connell and Moodie, for Messrs the Board cm their application for a sawmill lease of block 3, Glonkenich —Ranger Hughan reported that it was not desirable that the application should be granted, as the block had been reserved for supplying firewood and fencing.—Mr Connell said that if granted, seventeen chains of bush would he left between the block and the township.—The members of the B >ard objected to bush reserves being cut up and destroyed; but the question was adjourned to allow an expression of opinion from the residents of Tapauui to be obtained.

Messrs Guthrie and Larnaoh, per Messrs Connell and Moodie, applied for an ext usion of time for surveying their sawmill leases in Woodland district. Three months’ time was granted ; the whole rent to be paid now as deposit.

Messrs Connell and Moodie, for Mr Walter Miller, jun., asked the decision of the Board on his amended application for sections 37, 28, and 38, block 4, and 1 and 21, block 6, Waitahuna. The Warden’s report stated that the sale would not interfere with any existing water-race or mining interest Mr Connell said applicant was sixteen years of age, and that his power to purchase was limited to 400 acres.—Mr Beid said he objected only to the way in which they were selling it. .Bethought Mr Miller, sen,, was entitled to purchase as much laud as he liked that was declared open for sale, and that it could not be sold to a minor.—Mr Connell remarked that land vested in an infant, and a guardian.—The Chi&f Commissioner then proposed that it be minuted that the amended application be received, or “receipt approved To this Mr Connell objected, and a rather warm discussion ensued, that gentleman stating that if the Hoard could show that be was not j istitied in his action by jlaw he would subside, but that he was pbSttrvfely of opinion that a survey canid not

paid, and that Mr Liviugst n, Receiver of Land Revenue, would certainly not accept the money from him until ho could say the Boar ! had really grantol the application.— Mr Butterworth was opposed to receiving the ‘PP ication at all, as this particular one was surrounded by complications.—Mr Clarke was of a similar opinion, and Mr Strode punted out that the Land Officer hedged himself round in hw report with a number of qualifications and cautious remarks.—Finally the following was mi uted: '‘Receipt approved; Messrs Butterworth and Clark objecting.” Ranger Hughan reported on the application or Mr J. b. Mr Thomas Murray applied for a license to occupy sections 42 and 44, block 3, Table Hill, under the Planting Regulations. Referred to the Land Officer for report. Mr James Scully asked permission to construct and use a sleigh-road to a terrace on the south side of ."-impson’s Creek, Lake N\ akatip. Referred to Ranger for report. Ranger Tunis reported on Mr E. Caspar’s application to be allowed to form a tramway to the Two-mile Bush, Luke Wakatip, recommending that applicant should furnuh a plan, and sla'e the t'me be wished to occupy. The District Land Officer also reported. Survey to be forwarded to the Board. Mr John .VI ‘Neil applied to purchase two islands of the Clutha, being section 20, block -•3, Clutha district. To be sold by auction as land of special value. Mr John Hartley complained by letter i hat Mr C. Wilson, who lives in a hut in the quarry reserve, Papakaio, puts him to a great ueal of inconvenience. Referred to the Hanger for report.

Mr J. Scott renewed his application to purchase sections 27, 45, and 46, block 10 ” ;i itahuna hast. Refused, the Board having no power.

Mr James Puff applied to purchase 9 acres, 1 rood, 26 poles of land, part of Hill’s Oreek Township, he d under agricultural tease. Granted,

The following applications to purchase lands on goldfields were dealt with : James Docherty, sections 8 and 9, block 20 fuapeka Kast,-refused ; W. Lowe, section 71, block 5, do — approved ; J. Kendall, section 46, block 19, do.-refused : J. Michael, section 49, block 19, do.—referred to the Warden. The first three applications were tor unsmveyed, the last for surveyed land. Ibe receipt of application of Mr Henry Galbraith to purchase section IS, block 6, t uapeka East, was approved. Mr Gillies appeared for applicant.
