PRESS DRAMATIC CLUB.
The half-yearly meeting of the Club on Saturday evening was largely attended. From the report of the committee we make the following extracts :
At the tint meeting of the Club, the names of seven gentlemen only were enrolled ; but the number has since been gradually augmented, and there are new twenty-eight members on the roll, with the prospect of that nutnbep being greatly td. A$ ap instance of the t>vor with which'th- Club has been recejv.d by the pub’fc, it may be stated that applications for admission have been received from gentlemen not connected with the Press, and applications, it is needless to say, were not entertained, although some difficulty has been experieuc, d in defining the qualifications necessary for admis sion. During the half-year five performances (inclusive of the repetition of tho first programme), have been given, realising—the first two performances Lbs Bs, resulting in L6O being handed to the Scott Scholarship fund |tfie third performance was for Mr Eastwood’s benefit, realising a net balance of L7l 6s 6d j the fhprlh performance, for the Sailors’ Rome Fund, rea ised L 35 j and the final performance of the season, 1,21 JOs. The club appeared fa nine different purges, pad the total amount received from the five performances was L3Q2 Is fid. From this sum Lll3 10s has been deducted to defray expenses (altogether irrespective of the cost of wardrobes and other expenses incurred and paid by the members of the club), leaving LIBB 11s 6d as the total amount which the club has been enabled' to hand over to parlous objects during the half-year. . - . . At a general meeting of members it was decided thatthe Club should, at au early date, give a performance m aid 6f its library and \yardrpbc fund. Great hecta ity exist i fir providing q, wardrobe—a necessity patent to all those meinbais wfio tajfeu parts in the various pieces presented fo the public. Members have been in mo>f; casts dependent upon the geugrosity of private iudiyidualß for the loan of the various articks requisite for properly dressing the characters, and the ipconvenience thus caused, added to the worry induced, all point to the desirability of providing this adjunct to the Club. Before bringing this report to a dose, your Committee desire to mention the able assistance cheeifully rendered by the ladies who have taken part in the Club’s peiformances. Youi CfymraiUee al-o deajre to acknowledge, wi-h thanks, Mr Fisfi’a kind presentation of a number of plays, many of which will be found vet y useful to the Club.
