■Wellington, September 9. • n>nch confidence is felt in the assurance given by the Government to the Greymouth Harbor Works deputation regarding the operations to be carried out this year at Greymouth, that^ arrangements are being entered into for the importation from Home of screw colliers specially adapted for the trade. The firm of Messrs W. and G. Turnbull and Co. has preferred a salvage claim for LIO,OOO against the ship Strathnaver, which was towed in by the Stormbird. It is stated that they were willing to accept LI,OOO, hut that was declined, and now the full claim is made. The matter will be decided before a Court of Law. Auckland, September 9, The Oxford has arrived from London, with 450 immigrants, all well. The voyage occupied ninety-two days. Six infants died of whooping-cough and bronchitis. The doctor has laid various charges against the captain and mate, also regarding the deficient supply of medical comforts and milk. The charges will be investigated by the Immigration Officer.
All the returns for the Waitemata election are in. Mr Von der Hevde is returned by a majority of 53. Mr Gillies addressed Ms constituents last niKnt. His speech was occupied chiefly with a review of the business of the session, and a recapitulation of the measures introduced and their results. He spoke strongly regarding the action of the Government relative to the aholi tion of the Northern Provinces, and attributed the introduction of the resolutions to the Hon, Mr Russell. He said he was favorable to the abolition of Provincialism, not because of any inherent defects, but because it acted as a buffer between the Government and the people, and prevented the growth of public opinion. But they must have all the Provinces abolished or none. The Government had no right to niter the Constitution without an appeal to the people. If the e’ectors were prepared to forfeit their constitutional rights, he would place his resignation in their hands. The meeting was enthusiastic, and a unanimous vote of confidence was passed. . , ' September 10. At the iSew Zealand Insurance Company’s special meeting it was resolved to increase the capital to one million, in one hundred thousand shares; fifty thousand to be allotted to the present shareholders and fifty thousand to be offered to the public, on terms to be announced shortly. The shares will be paid up to L2. . Hokitika, September 10. Smith s tender for completion of the Kanieri water-race has been accepted. It is to be completed with bye-washes, and handed over to the Company on the 14th December, in gooi* working order, for L 4,580. The total cost of therace, exclusive of working expenses, will be -LiJOjOOO.
